Hey folks,
I design the layout and visual graphics of websites which I pass on to programmer. I usually use photoshop for this, but I spend more time in InDesign and find it better for layout. I've never used it for web layout because it's really a print layout, and most web designers have photoshop - but not all have InDesign - to open the files. But it can export 72dpi jpegs so why not? I could still do all the image editing in PS but place them in a layout in ID. Jpeg files are probably just as easy to work with, other than guides...hmmm...only cmyk color output in ID....anything else? No copy/paste text in jpegs...maybe it's best to stick with PS?
Has anyone used InDesign for web layout? Pros & cons over Photoshop?
And for programmers who receive comps from layout designers, any feedback regarding what makes your life easier...tips or tricks with files, guides, layers, format, etc.?

Re: Designing website layout in Photoshop...or InDesign?
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 2:47 PMPersonally, Fireworks is my favorite. Photoshop sucks for layout. I've never tried InDesign, I guess it would depend on whether it can optimize files or not.

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 5:17 PMwhat an odd thing to say. How exactly does Photoshop suck for layout?
I'm not knocking Fireworks, by any means, but I'd be hard pressed to find a visual designer for web who doesn't use photoshop astheir main tool.
Not angry, just curious... -

Re: Designing website layout in Photoshop...or InDesign?
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 12:54 AMYeah I am surprised as well.
Been using Photoshop for years for web layout & many consider it a must app for this.
And now that ImageReady is gone in CS3 Photoshop has more direct capabilities.

Re: Designing website layout in Photoshop...or InDesign?
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:18 AMOkay ... by comparison, it is not as user friendly in my humble opinion as Fireworks for web design layout. : )
Mind you, I haven't used it for this for several versions, so it probably has improved. Fireworks has panels for slice name right out in the open rather than having to double click, it has the opimization panel that makes it super simple to adjust each slice before export, and last time I used Photoshop, my transparent images would export with ghosting, which is not a problem at all in Fireworks. Plus, I like the way Fireworks handles vector art better than Photoshop, which still isn't quite there.
I am sure a lot of these things will get merged now that Adobe owns all of the products. And granted, photoshop is still the king when it comes to image editing.
