I've only worked in the industry a year. I recently quit my job because I felt it was time to move on and i wanted to have a long amount of time off for vacation, to redo my portfolio and to recoup from stressful personal issues before i headed out to find a new job.
I'm feeling a lack in confidence in contacting companies because they aren't posting jobs.
I just want to know from anyone who hire or people with just interesting stories.
If people are still willing to meet with you or talk with you even if they aren't advertising.
I'm just staling on these cover letters.
I kinda just need advice from someone more experienced.

Re: Need help from experienced gurus
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 7:31 AMI did this in Boston for about 3 months (cold contacts), it was tough at first, but I found myself becoming very confident and outgoing near the end because you have to be in order for them to look twice. Work off any possible personal contacts you or your friends may have first, then branch out, send follow-up emails, call. I ended up with several interviews from the process (though no job offers) and it was great interviewing practice.
The fact is that no one is going to call unless you put yourself out there.

Re: Need help from experienced gurus
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 8:45 AMMy sweetie just finished GD school in June and his portfolio is strong, but not big. He created a great web site that reflected his style, a stylish (if not sparse) resume, and he just did cold calls. He found a web site that listed just about every GD firm in Seattle and turned in his cover letter and resume at the places he felt that he related to best. The firm that ended up hiring him hadn't posted the job yet when he sent in his info - the designer had just put in their leave notice. :D He also had a couple of interviews as well and 1 other job offer (also not posted online or in the paper). You just gotta take a chance and if you feel strongly about your work you should be able to find something out there. -

Re: Need help from experienced gurus
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 8:48 PMRegister with agencies, they can get you in the door to some big name agencies,
and when your resume has some big names on it it is easier to get into other big name agencies.
If your work is good, and you present your portfolio in a professional way as to show how good you are,
you will get opportunities.
I have worked in NYC, San Francisco and LA- all competitive cities.
If your work is good it speaks for itself.
Where are you located?
Contact me direct if you are in LA & want a list of agencies. -

I guess the hardest thing about setting out on the career is the fear of actually doing it, well that is what i am feeling.
I'm feeling a bit more confident to actually do it.
everyones story is so great! really boosts me to get to it. thank you all so much. -

Re: Need help from experienced gurus
Sun, December 23, 2007 - 8:21 PMAll the best sugar!
Do some searches for creative agencies or creative temp agencies in Toronto.
Have you heard of Craigslist?
They sometimes have some good job listings or creative gigs.
Though the job offers on Craigslist in many cities are filled with cheap ass opportunists.

Re: Need help from experienced gurus
Mon, December 24, 2007 - 4:16 PMOk the best way to boost your self esteem is to keep on doing what your doing!
When not working on work for clients do design work for yourself, friends & family.
Keep doing and you will find you are getting better & better.
And don't forget to-
