Wanted: Rockstar Blog Logo Designer

Hi!

I need help with a very detailed / eye-catching / web-styled logo for my new blog.

I am starting a blog called ("Social Media Rockstar") - the default theme is up here - http://socialmediarockstar.com

It's about top social media users (power bloggers, top Digg users) and the top social media content.

I would like to get a ~960 x 165 header logo (.psd / .png file to export as a .jpg / .png) to sit on a white background. Vectors, semi-transparent pixels, micro details, spectacular typography /// would be good. [Must be technically / aesthetically impressive enough to not raise the eyebrows of bleeding-edge web snobs (social media power users]. Refined and subtle, more than gaudy or blingy.

The "Craigslist corporate-logo" class of design wouldn't work - it's gotta be Tokyo / San Franciso stylin'...

Can anyone recommend anyone semi-affordable (I'm a freelancer) and suitable for this project? Know anyone who might be able to knock it out?

Inspiration and downtime

Where do you find your inspiration?

I work at a bi-monthly magazine publisher. Because of the way our cycle works, I wind up with a couple weeks between issues with not a lot to do beside burn discs and look for inspiration, so I try to make it as methodical as possible so I don't feel like a total bum.

I start out by ripping apart magazines, sometimes buying a few at the bookstore, and pinning pages to a board. I also look for good ad design since a great deal of my workload is ads. I look for designer's names in the credits of well-designed magazines (I'm partial to Alexandra Ziegler who art directs Yoga Journal) and find more work they've done. I look online for good art, photography, interior design, color and pattern, anything at all.

I also spend some time finding humor online to pin to the board behind the printer (which functions like our water cooler, everyone hangs out there and stares at the board). I think humor and creativity go hand in hand.

Recently I've gotten pretty hooked on a collection of design blogs. They are colorful and girly-exactly what my readership likes. As a print designer, I look at these for color, pattern and fashion.
http://www.designspongeonline.com/
http://www.poppytalk.blogspot.com/
http://www.doseofdesign.blogspot.com/

So...anyone have sources of inspiration they want to share? I mean for the question to be very open--if going water skiing or studying the veins in leaf varieties or flicking M&Ms at your coworkers inspires you, awesome.

I'm also curious as to what everyone's workloads are like. Do you have downtime? Do you feel guilty about your downtime? How do you find productive ways to fill that time before you get slammed again?

Designing website layout in Photoshop...or InDesign?

Hey folks,

I design the layout and visual graphics of websites which I pass on to programmer. I usually use photoshop for this, but I spend more time in InDesign and find it better for layout. I've never used it for web layout because it's really a print layout, and most web designers have photoshop - but not all have InDesign - to open the files. But it can export 72dpi jpegs so why not? I could still do all the image editing in PS but place them in a layout in ID. Jpeg files are probably just as easy to work with, other than guides...hmmm...only cmyk color output in ID....anything else? No copy/paste text in jpegs...maybe it's best to stick with PS?

Has anyone used InDesign for web layout? Pros & cons over Photoshop?

And for programmers who receive comps from layout designers, any feedback regarding what makes your life easier...tips or tricks with files, guides, layers, format, etc.?

Illustrator stroke query

I was enjoying how white stroke was "eating away" at some text (for logotype). I could really control the weight of the font using stroke. The only problem is that I found a weight that is perfect. However, the stroked text isn't very versatile, for instance, for placing into a color ground in a website, advert or whatever.

My question is, How do I keep the "non-eaten away" portion of the text, the part that I want? Sorry for the overly- techie question. Just thought someone might know right off the top of their head.

Online design schools?

Need some opinions.

I already have the job. I'm working in the field. But I feel like I'm really a little behind the times (I started out cutting color separations and stripping negs, if any of you remember that), and I KNOW I'm not using the software to its best possible advantage. Most of my work is print -- designing medical forms and a few identity pieces, and running prepress work on other designer's stuff -- but I'd like to branch out and do more creative work for our customers.

There isn't really a program of night classes offered here at the college, so I'm looking at something online. I looked at sessions.edu a while back because they covered digital illustration and some stuff that looked interesting. I have specific skills in form design, but I'm looking for more generic graphic design (print or web) and I'd like a program that has a lot of options like that.

I don't need a job, so I don't need placement services or anything like that, but I want to know that whatever program I choose it will be a good value. I'm thinking a certificate program would be nice, just to have some gold star to work towards :)

So -- suggestions? Does anybody have any horror stories about any of the programs out there? Any one you'd personally recommend? I'm not looking for another degree, but I'm not adverse to taking the course load for one.

What's the best of the online options? Thanks in advance!

Has anyone used a piece of software to convert a PDF to HTML? I have seen a few available online. I created a document in InDesign and need to send it in an email like HTML. Photoshop could turn the PDF into a Zoomify object, but I don't know what to do with that. Please share your advice.
thanks!!

Justifying logo design costs

Ok...I know I shouldn't have to justify anything to anyone if I'm confident and comfortable with my work. But I have a client that I've been working for on a number of projects who doesn't get why design takes time/money. He's pretty ambitious and strong-willed with his vision of what he wants his stuff to look like. Under other circumstances I wouldn't take him on as a new client, but there's a bigger, long-term potential to the situation that I'd like to hold on to as the communications manager / lead designer of a new, large company.

I designed what I consider a great logo for his first business that is used on busses, billboards and countless magazine ads and printed marketing materials. Now he's starting a new business and he wants me to 'replicate' a logo idea he has in his head and can't see why it would take more than an hour or two of my time!

Again, assuming I don't want to lose this client, and that -more importantly- I don't want to be making marketing materials as the lead designer for the company using a logo that is a quick, hack job, nor do I want to have someone else do a shitty job and have to use their hasty work....I'm less concerned about the money I'd get from the hours of work and more concerned about ending up with a good logo and keeping the percieved value of my work high. Even if I did it pro bono, I'd still want to show that this stuff takes serious work. He sees a little logo as a very simple design process.

Does anyone know of any websites I could show him to 'prove' how much time, energy and money go into making a successful corporate logo. I don't like having to justify it, but that's how it is, so there's no point in telling me to drop him, or let him go somewhere else and find out how much they charge etc. I just want some third party, objective breakdown of the time and expense of designing a successful logo...something to show him casually in our discussions about it. (I consider it part of the job as his communications manager to lead him in the right direction and help him understand the process to some degree.)

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

source for web designers and/or developers?

(x-posting)

In the past I've had great difficulty finding good freelance/contractor help. Well, "great difficulty" is an understatement. I don't try to undercut people when it comes to rate and I don't try to drive people into the ground with round-the-clock work hours. And yet...

Can anyone recommend sources for finding EXPERIENCED, QUALITY web designers and/or developers? Places to advertise or agencies to use?
To be clear I'm looking for both a designer and a separate developer, not one person to do both jobs.

I'm looking for people who:
can work on complex, multi-site, 6 figure projects
can take direction
can meet deadlines
can work entirely remotely via internet and still be reliable
don't need to be taught on the job
are at a senior level of experience
are professional enough to have phone meetings with clients
are actually worth the rate they're asking

Not folks trying it out. Not people who claim to be a designer or developer but actually have only created 3-page sites for their local bar or band while working from their Mom's basement. Not people who need to be spoon fed and hand held. Not people who want to take my project to get experience. ;)

Suggestions are much appreciated. :)
If you have specific names/contacts please PM me the details rather than post them publicly here.

Text: White on Black or Black on White?

In general, we use white text on dark backgrounds (blues, black/greys, etc). Our work is most often projected with lights dimmed, sometimes printed on huge boards. One of our clients, a color science/vision expert states that our "color polarities are reversed" and that "the human eye apparently can discern small dark text against light backgrounds more easily. I remember in art school that light on dark was hammered into our heads. My CEO is always concerned about contrast and readability. We've been doing white on darks for years and now there's a huge discussion about changing our default.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I've been doing some research and the opinion of what's better in terms of readability is split 50/50.

shopping cart help

Hello,
I recently took a job as a web designer, which is something I have not done much of. Years ago I was an excellent unix network administrator but have since fallen out of the IT sector. Now I have an excellent opportunity to return and I find myself stumbling with all the different programming options. Being an administrator I am familiar with Perl and administered many other languages but I never wrote my own scripts. So when my new employer asked me if I knew shopping carts I confidently answered yes. Now I realize my experience is limited to server adminisration and not the actual creation of a shopping cart. My question is what language would you recommend a newbie to create a shopping cart in? Hopefully something easy and quick to learn without the need of previous knowledge. Thank you for your time and assistance.

I've only worked in the industry a year. I recently quit my job because I felt it was time to move on and i wanted to have a long amount of time off for vacation, to redo my portfolio and to recoup from stressful personal issues before i headed out to find a new job.

I'm feeling a lack in confidence in contacting companies because they aren't posting jobs.

I just want to know from anyone who hire or people with just interesting stories.
If people are still willing to meet with you or talk with you even if they aren't advertising.

I'm just staling on these cover letters.
I kinda just need advice from someone more experienced.

Need help -- problems with Process Uncoated colors, printing too light

Hi all,

I've been studying graphic design a while on my own, doing photo enhancement and illustration with photoshop and illustrator. Overwhelmingly I've designed for practice and for the web, and now that I am trying to do some work for print I am quite frustrated! I have some books and have been reading about process vs spot colors, RGB vs CMYK and thought I understood it all, but I'm having some problems.

I'm using process uncoated colors, because I wanted to settle on a certain color that I can reproduce in the future (for a logo), and printing from a desk inkjet. Naturally the colors show up differently on my 3 LCD displays, so I am printing multiple colored versions of the design to check them in print. But the printer I am using will only print very light colors, and even the blacks are coming out grey-ish! I have changed the ink cartridges and still they are not printing well. Also I checked the transparency and it's all at 100% opaque.

So, is this something to do with Process Uncoated colors, or could it be another setting or the printer itself? I'm right now using a canon pixma 1700--not a great printer, but it's billed as a photo printer so it should be able to handle color. In the past, I've printed photos and found them to be oversaturated, so now it seems I'm having the opposite problem.

Any advice you all can give would be much appreciated. This is sort of confusing and frustrating to me, and has really set me behind on getting my collateral printed (it's for my business as a freelance writer).

While I'm on the soapbox here I also have another related question about color printing... I would like to print some window decals, but I was wondering if I need to change any of the settings for printing because it is on transparent paper instead of white??

Thanks for your help.
Best program for catalog creation?

Here's the story: Boss has now decided we're going to start doing our 800-item office supply catalog in house. (!!!!AAAAHHHHHGGGGG!!!)

Before ,when we did short 24-page jobs, I just typed out all the text in word, then flowed it into Quark, putting item pictures off to the side. A lot of work, but not THAT bad.

We have an Excel database of item information for 800 items. I'm thinking there's a better way to do this than just making one big word filem, which would probably end up being too big to import anyway. Suggestions?

We have inDesign, but I'm not keen on it. Would prefer to stick to a Quark, but I would buy an indesign product if it made things easier.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

usually i get work from referrals or the creative temp agency, but i learned about guru.com and wonder if anyone has any feedback?

i would want to use it primarily to get map design clients.

any other sites like guru.com that would be recommended?

Advice for Newbie to the world of temp graphics work

Hey Guys,

I'm a long time artist who finds himself for the first time doing temp graphics work for an agency.

Up till relatively recently I had been doing my print work almost exclusively with Photoshop. Six months ago my eyes were opened with InDesign CS2 and then more recently with Illustrator CS which has come a long way in the past several years.

On Wednesday I jump into the world of temp graphics work at a magazine publisher. So what are, in your opinion, the most important things, concepts, tricks, technical issues, plus anything else you can think of, to remember as I continue on my graphics journey.

Thanks in advance for your help and consideration.

a backup resource for All About Design

Since Tribe has been having difficulties I realized it would suck to lose good places like this and the people in them. So I got proactive and made a "backup" site called Tribe Refugees, which includes some discussion groups to parallel favorite tribes.

I've created an All Things Design Group as part of the larger Tribe Refugees network, to discuss everything from typography to web design to illustration.
You can use the site as a place to:
- chat during the donut times
- "backup" your Tribe contacts
- retreat to should Tribe just finally kick it

You need to first signup for the site (Tribe Refugees), then join the Group (All Things Design -- which is just a matter of clicking the Join Now link).
All Things Design: http://triberefugees.ning.com/group/allthingsdesign
Tribe Refugees: http://triberefugees.ning.com/

If you'd like more information about the Tribe Refugees site:
How to Join: http://triberefugees.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1400844%3ATopic%3A25
About the Site: http://triberefugees.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1400844%3ATopic%3A4901
Similarities between Ning and Tribe: http://triberefugees.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1400844%3ATopic%3A6716

Please note: the site/group was intended to support this tribe, NOT compete or detract from it. I just thought you guys might like to know about it so you can bookmark it, or signup to squat your space, or go ahead and participate. :)

that was said by my bf today, a fellow graphic designer. I laughed so hard because it perfectly describes the past 2 weeks:
designing and designing and designing and not seeming to get anywhere.

It just seemed the perfect expression for those projects that are slow, painful, and massive... and don't seem to progress no matter what you do. So I thought I'd share. :)

What is working with mud and straw bales?

DEFINITION:

Straw bale construction uses baled straw from wheat, oats, barley, rye, rice and others in walls covered by stucco. Straw bale are traditionally a waste product which farmers do not till under the soil, but do sell as animal bedding or landscape supply due to their durable nature. In many areas of the country, it is also burned, causing severe air quality problems. It is important to recognize that straw is the dry plant material or stalk left in the field after a plant has matured, been harvested for seed, and is no longer alive. Hay bales are made from short species of livestock feed grass that is green/alive and are not suitable for this application. Hay is also typically twice the price of straw.

CONSIDERATIONS:

This technique for constructing walls has been recently revived as a low cost alternative for building highly insulating walls. The technique was practiced in the plains states in the latter 1800's and early 1900's. Many of the early structures are still standing and being used. The technique has been applied to homes, farm buildings, schools, commercial buildings, churches, community centers, government buildings, airplane hangars, well houses, and more.

Straw is also being used as a building material currently in sheet materials such as sheathing and wall panels. However, the approach of using bales directly, despite its history, is a new technique from a regulatory standpoint. The City of Austin recently passed a straw bale construction building code which is the fifth code enacted by a government body in the United States.

Building walls with straw bales can be accomplished with unskilled labor, and the low costs of the bales make this technique economically attractive. However, it is important to realize that the cost of straw bales will differ depending on what time of year they are harvested and how far they need to be transported. They are cheaper at the time of harvest rather than after they have been stored from the previous season and, of course, cheaper if they are transported shorter distances. Bales must also be protected from getting wet. Costs also begin to rise when one considers the type of stucco and its application. A mud plaster taken from site soil, applied by the owner/builder, and maintained by the owner is quite inexpensive, but may take a long time to apply. A cement stucco applied by a contractor is accomplished quickly and lasts a very long time without any maintenance, but also costs money. As with any style of construction, the more labor input by the owner and the less by the contractor, the less costly it will be.

Two basic styles of straw bale construction have been used: post and beam construction with straw bale infill, and structural straw bale construction or "Nebraska" style (the weight of the roof is supported by the bales). There are a number of straw bale buildings now located in the Austin area and local expert consultation and construction is readily available.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate so much!

I can create a symbol and save it temporarily into symbols file, but when I close the project and start a new one, it's gone.????? Why?

Also, in the swatches, I am wondering if it's possible to change the "black and white radial" swatch to a different color?

Thank you so much for your help!

I am but a novice at this.... I just spent 4 hours trying to figure it out and I can not. I've printed out the "help section", but even still I can not find the proper answer.
working faster with a good mouse

I'm all about keyboard shortcuts, but...I just got a new mouse and wow does it make things better in InDesign and Photoshop.
I got the Logitech VX Revolution notebook mouse with two left and right click buttons, a back and forward button, a scroll wheel that can click or spin freely, can move left and right for horizontal page scrolling and you can click it to jump to another application or doc. that's open , It also has two cool other buttons; an instant search (highlight a phrase and click it and a new tab with google results comes up), and a zoom slider!

Logitech has a program called SetPoint that allows you to customize ever feature and every button, from the function to the speed of scrolling and zooming. I've gone in and set it so that in Photoshop and InDesign, the back and forward buttons are undo and esc. (for exiting the text tool in InDesign). You can assign any key command or special feature to the buttons.

All of this is probaby old news for those of you who use flashy new stuff all the time, but I was stuck in the click and drag mode and have been dedicated to learning all the keyboard shortcuts. This new mouse, especially the scroll wheel w. horizontal scrolling, and the zoom slider, have allowed for an incredible jump in speed when navigating around a document. I don't know if I'll ever use the navigation window in photoshop again...

So for those of you who are holding on to the trusty old mighty mouse or even a standard two button plus scroll wheel mouse, spent a few bucks and get one of these and you will save your wrist from RSI and speed up your productivity. That's my two cents...

Now to get my hands on a wacom tablet...

links to good portfolio sites?

I need to redesign my site. I've been too busy actually doing work to have time to keep up with my portfolio site and now it's woefully outdated (visually, technically, content-wise). I wanted to browse some quality portfolio sites for brain food, but haven't been able to find any. I just searched through the People section on CommArts and it was sad.

Anyone have links to individual portfolio sites or a collection of sites? standard and flash are both fine.

thanks.

Hi all,
I am on my 2nd semester of studying graphic design one class at a time. I have lots of supplies, sketches, etc from my sketching and design basics classes. I do the work on my dining table in my 1 bedroom apartment and keep some pencils, etc on my small, overcrowded computer desk area. The stuff seems to take over the apartment one corner at a time, in addition to the dining table. Can anyone offer me advice on keeping the stuff organized????
thanks,

I bought and installed it today.

So far, so good - except for a Flash crash. And the hideous icons, but you can replace them here:

Thank God they kept (and improved) Fireworks.

Dreamweaver is desgined from the ground up for more modern, complex CSS layouts. Good. The AJAX widgets ("sprys") in Dreamweaver look good.

Nice attempt at supporting mobile device development.

I haven't even gotten into PS or Illustrator yet....

What do you think???

so growing up in the usa we have lots of learned brand/logo regocnition. are there any logos that represent a truely
eco friendly/ good for you good for the planet/ products out there you think are widely recognized? i started of thinking of "green"
products/brands that are (going) mainstream, body shop, patagonia, timberland, seventh generation, santa cruz juices, earthbound farms, i mainly found myself pulling up food companies and outdoor gear. most of the real efficiency and renewable energy products are made by larger companies so when you hear sanyo you might not necessarily think solar, although they are a major pv producer....
so thats it for now, to recap i am offering four assignments-
what are the most mainstream eco/green brands/products you can think of?
thanks guys.

Has there been any research done to see if a logo that uses just "text" words is more or less effective than a logo that is a graphic symbol.

for example, A company is called Lake Publishing. the logo could just be the words "Lake Publishing" done in a graphic typography style which would become the logo or....they could have an image logo like a circle with water etc.... just wondering.

suggestions for organizing swatches?

Does anyone have any tips? When I start with new clients, I like to give them some color combos to choose from, often made in kuler. The little boxes of color all mixed up on the PS swatch pallet are limiting, and no matter what name you give it in kuler, since you can't see the colors from the ASE file icon it gets confusing I find. Maybe there's a little application that helps organize them visually? Just trying to keep everything professional with new clients. Thanks for any suggestions.

transferring effects between Adobe programs

I've made a logo in Illustrator 10 using two large letters, turned into outlines and then overlapped so they intertwine. There's a slight gradient on the letters. The client wants a hint of a metallic look applied to it. None of the features in Illustrator seem to work. I imported it as a smart object into Photoshop CS2 and applied a slight emboss effect. I want to keep it as a vector. Is it possible to export to Illustrator as a smart object and keep the emboss effect? Or even better would be to save it in some vector format so I could work with it in InDesign CS2.

I'm getting confused by file formats and switching back and forth between programs. What's the best way to keep it as a vector illustration but keep the emboss effect while using it in InDesign or Illustrator? Is this even possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Apologies for cross posting.
Thanks,
Jason

Hi…I’m new here…hoping to make some friends. My primary interests are art, new media and environmental stewardship. I’m looking to connect with Digital Artists, to include them in an international touring art exhibition called Common Ground www.commonground2008.com. The theme for each piece in the collection will be about the Environment. We launch our exhibition in Beijing to coincide with the Olympics in 2008, then on to cities in Europe and the Americas in 2009 and 2010. Would love to hear from you and support you any way that I can. Please join my community of friends and our tribe, Common Ground 2008. Peace.

We need to stand up for creativity...

I just read an article today on the Communication Arts Web site, titled 'The Other Inconvenient Truth,' which speaks about the need to preserve creativity in our society.

I thought that this article had so many strong points that it was too good not to share with everyone.

One part that rang so loudly was this:

"We can think cobbling together bits and pieces of other legitimately original works makes us creative all we want, but it’s a delusional concept. Not only is it demotivating to truly creative people, it sends a terrible message. That your original idea is my original idea and as such I have a right to do anything I want with it. Fact: It’s creative people who make the world a better place, not creative leeches."

Here's the link to the story:

Whore!-Culture Magazine-Design meeting

Hey Y'all, you are cordially invited to the first ever Whore Magazine Design Meeting.
March 26th, 6:00, @ The Last Supper Club(23rd and Valencia)
The meeting will be held downstairs in their private banquet room. We will provide some munchies and some wine. Sadly as we are a new start-up and working largely without a budget all other cocktails will have to be on your head. However, if one of you lovelies offer to be our AD director we can start making some money and treat you all in the luxurious style that you deserve.

The meeting is to discuss design, marketing and layout. We are looking for give away the illustrious titles of;
Photo Editor
Ad Director
Marketing Director
Design Editor
to some wonderful persons who are looking to stretch their talent and gain some experience. I hope to see you there and I am excited to hear your ideas. Whore! Magazine is an historical and contemporary culture magazine focusing on those individuals who push against limits, hunger for experience and occassionally crash and burn. This is a greaty opportunity to join in on the ground level of a new print publication that-if we have your help- will indeed change the world. Or it will at least make it more interesting. Come join in the fun.
"You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think." Dorothy Parker
~Oh yes we can...~
Cheers, Ginger Murray~Editor

If so, maybe we can start a design group, possibly an ISDA chapter.

Hello all about design tribe,

Please join me in the dynamic experimental world of trading imaginative energies with other creative souls.....
Let the PSD layers fly, don't be shy, contact your fellow vision holders and give this adventure a try. My greatest hope is that people will connect in this space, give each other a delicious taste, and give birth to new place, one created in joy and respect for each others grace.
Be grateful for each other, we are all sisters and brothers, and in our struggle to create art, we honor that which has given us life - the womb of all creation, the supreme galactic mother. So go ahead, reach out and remix someone, don't forget to spend every moment having fun, look into the future and set the dial on your ego to none, open your arms - and your minds, the endeavor to enlighten has just begun.

Im learning web design the hard way (on my own) in both flash and dreamweaver (HTML) and was wondering if someone could direct me to some good sites or books to teach me tricks for letting clients make their own changes to the sites. For example, If I design a site but want the normal nondesigner/ non computer wiz to be able to change the images or text what is that best and easiest way for them to do that?

seeking critique...new to photoshop and web design

Hi everybody,
I am just learning photoshop and am in the process of designing the homepage for my astrology website. I am wondering if I can post a rough draft of the design (or maybe a couple of drafts) to this group and get a critique. I am at such a beginner stage, that I am not sure what the rules-of-thumb are for web design. So, I'd like to know if I'm even on the right track with this.
How would I post the designs to this group to get feedback?
Thanks for any help!
Happy V. Day!

web hosting - relaiblility and good support

I webmaster a simple business site.

I have a couple of problems. The company we've been hosted on (web site and email) has been sold several times and they're reliability has gotten pretty bad. Our Web site and email goes down periodically. They moved our site from one server to another several months ago and all our secure scripts no longer worked. They still haven't been able to fix it. Currently, our Email goes down regularly - like right now... and I've still been unable to get hold of a support person (on hold for the past 2 hours).

I also need some web design stuff - especially related to anything beyond basic HTML.

What I'd like to do is find a solid local SF Bay Area hosting service - or at least one that is extremely reliable for a business. And if there is a problem - the opportunity to contact someone that has a clue as to what they're doing in a reasonable amount of time.

Any suggestions or if you are the one - please let me know.

Thanks,
Inspiration and new design?

Where do you look for what's new, hot, popular, in-style, cutting-edge, etc?
What are your sources for inspiration when starting something from scratch?
Do you try to keep up with the current design trends, rely on timeless elements and style, or forge your own?

It seems that these days rounded-corner rectangles and tabs, grey on black (or different shades of the same color), dotted/dashed outlines, 45degree arrows, drop shadows, and especially large suble gradients are some of the elements that designers are using.

The fade-out reflection below (as if the product is sitting on a piece of glass) has been done to death. Shiny mock-reflections are still in though, it would seem.

The vector graphic edge and corner effects and grunge styles are starting to loose their novelty. The circles/bubbles from a year or two ago are almost gone. Nevertheless, vector art is here to stay and there are some interesting new looks on the horizon.

And full-spread professional photographs with people (such as ads in fashion mags) seem to the universal, perpetual element to signify high-quality.

Any other observations on what's current?
Where do you look to find the tomorrow's 'cool'?

I have a set of Alvin Ellipse Templates, both large and small, that I would like to sell. They go from 10º to 80º, in 5º increments. The small set is missing two templates, 10º and 50º for a total of 28 templates in all.

I'm asking $130. (firm) and I live in Altadena (10min... from Art Center).

I am starting to study graphic design - one class at at time while working full time (primarily non-graphics job). I'd like to take some 1 or 2 day classes to learn the Adobe graphics software. Looks like there are several places offering classes in San Francisco in each of the applications. Does anyone have thoughts on which of these places offers the best (beginner) classes?
Thanks!!
My neighbor sent me the following link. I believe it involved something like a Watcom drawing tablet and some unknown software that recorded the pencil / brush strokes and put them into a replayable Flash movie.

Does anyone know how this is done?

Is there a better/comparable one in the same price range? Is there a noticeable difference between the sharp and "ultra sharp" besides the $100+ price difference?
So, please share, what kind of computer are you using for your graphic/web/illustration designs?

Massive Change anyone?

Has anyone here been to the exhibit at the MCA in Chicago (or anywhere else the exhibit might have traveled)? I was pretty awe-struck (a couple of martinis *might* have helped) by the sheer scope and amount of detail. Seems both a celebration of achievement as well as a very hard look into the challenges staring back at us.
http://www.mcachicago.org/massivechange/index.html
<<Design has emerged as one of the world’s most powerful forces. It has placed us at the begining of a new, unprecedented period of human possibility, where all economies and ecologies are becoming global, relational and interconnected.>>
<<For many of us design is invisible. We live in a world that is so thoroughly configured by human effort that design has become second nature, ever-present, inevitable, taken for granted. And yet, the power of design to transform and effect every aspect of daily life is gaining widespread public awareness.>>

Color Printer Suggestions?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this tribe and joined because my bf is currently in school for graphic design (although he's been doing free lance/self-taught stuff for years and years). He really wants a good quality color printer for x-mas. Can anyone suggest one? What companies have the clearest prints or the widest range of good color? I'm also hoping for one where the color won't run if it gets wet, but that might be too spendy for me. I don't have a price cap just yet, I just want to hear what others have to say first before I decide on a reasonable price. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks!
-Tri

I have to make 2 portfolios; one for my business services and one for a school project. I would like them to be largely overlapping in content to avoid having to double the work, but...

The business one will be primarily on the web, and the school one will have to be submitted in print.

I am well versed in Photoshop, but not great with Image Ready or slices for making web content. I am also quite proficient in InDesign. I'm *just* starting to learn Dreamweaver.

QUESTION: What's the best way to present both graphics and text content for both web and print without having to construct new files for each format?

I was thinking thinking of using Photoshop/ImageReady to make a file and then save it in two versions (print and web-optimized). Or could I make files in InDesign that could be used for the web, since there will be lots of text?

Thank you in advance for any assisstance.

does anyone...print brokers in Miami?

hello people...
I am a graphic artist in Puerto Rico. Digital printing costs are really high here ans I usually print 4x6 flyers and business cards in Miami, with PK Graphics. I am considering the idea of becoming a "print broker"..a new term for me. basically, regardless of wether I design the artwork or not..I could be the middle man between clients and printers. I found Zoo Printing, which gives great trade rates, but they are in CA and don't ship to PR. They print in quantities of less that 5,000. Pk only does 5,000 or more, gang run. Anyway, my question is..

Does anyone know of a good digital printer in the FLA area (it's closests to where I live, so shipping should be less), than gives good print brokerage prices?

All responses appreciated. Thank you!

The Value of Work

Hi- I'm new to this tribe and have a question for you product design pros out there. Here's the situation: 4 years ago, I started a company with a girlfriend. We manufacture dog products, the most innovative item of the line being a series of collars, leads and dog tags with little buttons with epoxy-domed images set into the leather. I am the designer- every item in the line, plus the (admittedly unimpressive, I'm not a web designer) website and logo, is something I designed. Here's a link to the page on our website: http://luckypupdesigns.com/pictovision.html

There's another company, Winky & Dutch, that's been around for many years that uses similar domes in jewelry, so I didn't come up with this out of the blue- my partner & I liked their stuff and wanted to do something similar, but on leather goods and with different artwork. We actually approached them about doing a line for them, but they dragged their feet for six months, so we decided to go ahead and do it ourselves. But I spent eight months of my life researching suppliers and contractors, getting prototypes made, working with a metal caster to come up with a setting piece that could be attached to leather, research, development , art direction and creation of the images that went on each dome- some were public domain images that I modified or non-pd images that I changed quite a bit, one style was licensed from Shepard Fairey, and some were created by me from scratch. It was a lot of work, and the company was and remains the only job I've had during this period. There's no other company in the pet product world with the same sensibility, and everything you see in the line (including other types of collars, dog coats, tshirts) exists because I did gthe work to create it.

We've grown at an impressive rate, but like all small businesses, any money that has come in has been going to develop new product and place larger orders each time. My partner, who has been working other jobs as well this whole time, decided she was sick of working for free, despite claiming to have been fully aware that a new business typically takes 3-5 years to show a substantial profit- we're right on schedule. She wants to sell the company, and we've been discussing what the business is worth. (I'm not interested in running it myself, too big, so buying her out is not an option) My accountant told me that when a business is sold, the worth is made up of numerous components: the value of the company itself, the designs, logo, URL, inventory, equipment, etc. She feels the company is worth very little, but both my accountant and I believe she is seriously undervaluing it.

However, assuming I own the copyright for all the designs- gotta consult with a lawyer on this- even if the company itself is not worth much, I might be able to sell the designs, logo, and perhaps the URL (since I bought it under my own name, not the company's) separately.

So, my question for those of you out there who have freelance-designed for another company, what do you think this is worth? We are a small company, annual sales around $125k at this point but with proper marketing and distribution it should move three times that. This is something that the buyer would be able to base their business on for many years to come.

You may find my book, "The Graphic Designer's Guide to Clients," helpful in answering some of these questions. Here is the link
http://www.amazon.com/Graphic-Designers-Guide-Clients-Happy/dp/1581152760/sr=1-2/qid=1157403190/ref=sr_1_2/102-0178004-6935324?ie=UTF8&s=books
Though please note that even the author, still very much a practicing designer, has difficulties -- clients are tricky beasts, always trying to get something (a lot) for nothing. The trouble is, we designers, who love what we do so much, are too often willing to give it away for free, hoping against hope that the client will recognize our great talents and pay what it's really worth.

Looking for a highly recommended way to learn web dev/design

What is the most highly recommended legitimate college or website, free or paid that offers all classes online for a web development or web design degree beginning with the very basics? What is the best resource for learning how to design websites and/or develop Web 2.0 software from the bottom up? Any advice would be helpful. I’m looking for actual courses, because I think I’ve already bookmarked every tutorial out there known to man.

Hi again, sorry for a second post in the same day!

I am looking for a one-time (or periodic) SEO consultation for my website www.mybizoffice.com

Preferably someone who plays well with both PC and Mac users, since I am hoping to reach both audiences.

Please contact me here on tribe or email me LGreene (at) mybizoffice.com with a link to your website and your proposal.
We currently use google ad-words and may consider other pay per click or per conversion services, however I am most interested in architecture, searchability, meta-tags, and other methods that you know more about than I do.

No spam please -- we aren't interested in buying traffic and random clicks. We have an extremely targeted offering and need targeted, smart, web traffic.

Due to the nature of the services we provide, this gig can either be a 1099 contract job, corp-to-corp, or a full time W-2 employment situation. Familiarize yourself with our website for more details on how that works, and see www.mybizoffice.com/solutionsforindividuals
if you are a contract based professional looking for full time W-2 engagement.

What I'm wondering is:

A - where do people go in the Bay Area to get the whole tube-and-shrink wrap thing done? and
B - is there any way to do it ecologically?

any help here would be lovely, thanks!

Leaving Design Proposals with Potential Clients

greetings-

my professor says DONT DO IT! personally, i agree. while i like to think that most ppl are honest, after ive put hard hours into a design, im not about to leave it with an unsigned client OR email it them either. they could easily hire someone else to impliment my design. might as well fuck myself.

we just talked about this yesterday in class...and lo and behold, a potential client wants samples via email of what i can do for their re-design.

i have been screwed before so ive learned now.

what are other people's experience with this?
have any other recommendations of how to get around this? i told them id be happy to present in person and leave copies of designs of my current clients.

cheers,
shiva

Please help... I need to convert a .jpg to vector tonite!

Hi all... I have a .jpg that I need to convert to a vector format in order to have metal laser cutting done for our Burningman camp necklaces.

I'm thinking I need to trace the bitmapped image in a program that lets me do vector lines and circles and basic shapes. I'm trying to do it in Paint Shop Pro 8 because that's all I have and I want to cry. There is nothing instinctive or user friendly about this application.

Do you know of an app that'll do a conversion without my having to retrace the design?

Or is there an app where I can get an online trial version that'll give me enough features that I can do this?

I don't want to have to purchase new software, and time is of the essence. I was hoping to get this done tonite, but I just can't figure out how to get Paint Shop Pro to work, it's a nightmare. I miss Corel Draw. It used to be so simple then :-)

Thanks for your help!

SF graphic design programs

Hi all,
I am looking into taking some classes in graphic design in San Francisco starting this fall. Probably just one class at a time over about 2 years. I have minimal experience and none with the "right" software. I have always created publications here & there at work (nothing gorgeous) or managed design projects. The kind of work I am looking to do would be marketing/educational for local environmental organizations. So far the programs I've found are:
city college of SF
SFSU
Academy of Art

Quite the range of tuition fees and prestige. Can anyone give me advice on where to enroll?
thanks,
ilana

I don't want to use SuitcaseFusion, but FR is not

Heyouall!

So I am very new on this of drawing and playing graphically on the computer... I just discover this whole new world of devices for designers, and I learned that I can actually "draw" in my mac... So I really want to buy a Wacom thing, but don't know much about them, and I don't want to expend that much, like $189.99 will be the max I am willing to pay.

I use Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Flash and Fireworks. Mainly for my personal and friends sites and just 'cus is better than watching tv.

Any advice would be highly appreciated,
Merci beaucoup!

feeling STIFLED in a brand..

I work for a non-profit (research institution - fairly blah subject..) and am feeling totally stuck with interpreting and applying our new brand.. Since the design firm that "re-branded" us didn't provide any useable guidelines for applying the brand across different products (imagery, typography considerations, print and multimedia applications, etc.), I am feeling really limited creatively.. I have a background in design, so I should know what to do, right? I'm having serious difficulties knowing what kind of leeway I have with the brand.. -just seems like everything I want to do is breaking the rules (of which haven't been written, of course..)

Specifically, I need to produce a web design that reflects our logo, has elements of our brand, but can't look like our regular web site..

Has anyone dealt with this recently? Any ground rules I should consider? jeez.. -feeling like a hack, and that I need to go back to school!! I'm SO uninspired right now..

I need some help in pricing

hey there tribe..
all you funky ass folk.
I recently finished a logo for a photographer, he liked it alot so now he wants to get cards done, I know how, and I did price the logo, but how do I price a business card?..I'll be using some of the elements of the logo, but what is the going price to get a business card done?
I usaly charge 70/hr depending on the project and who it is. So I'm wondering is 100 bones to much to ask for the card file? Iv'e spent at least 3 hours on it, with revisions and the sort.
(this is of course without printing)

thanks.

Hey guys...

This is a silly question but I wonder if there is an app or a plug-in out there that makes arrows???
I know in Adobe Illustrator there is a lame attempt but is there more sample arrows out there?
Need to make some for a job I am working on and it would take me too long to make some...perhaps there is a better way.
